The Herpes Simplex Virus

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of the herpes simplex virus which are called HSV1 and HSV2. Usually genital herpes is caused by HSV2, but HSV1 can be contracted if having oral sex with someone who has a cold sore on their mouth.

HSV1 is the virus that causes cold sores and blisters that surround the mouth, lips, and nose. Many people in the world have the HSV1 virus. Many people develop cold sores as they are very easily transmitted from person to person by kissing and sharing utensils.

HSV2 is a sexually transmitted disease which causes sores, lesions and blisters on the genital area. It is transmitted through sexual contact which can include vaginal oral and anal sex, by people having unprotected sexual intercourse.

The HSV virus does not live for very long periods outside the body, so despite rumors to the contrary you cannot catch genital herpes from sitting on the toilet seat after someone else has used it.

HSV2 can affect different people in different ways. Some people despite contracting the virus may never have an outbreak, whilst others may have an outbreak on a regular basis.

A first outbreak is always the worst, and can make a person feel quite ill. They develop symptoms of flu and feverishness and can also develop swelling to the glands surrounding the infected area.

There is also significant discomfort within the genital area with itching and pain followed by sores and lesions that appear hours after the first symptoms. The sores can appear anywhere that has been infected by the virus and this can include the vagina, buttocks, penis, scrotum and anus. The sores can make it difficult and painful to pass both urine if situated on the penis or vagina, and feces if situated in the anus or rectum.

The sores start out as painful red bumps, which soon develop into watery blisters and sores. The sores usually ooze out a watery fluid and blood, but after a few days start to heal up. The whole of the genital area will feel very sore and tender for a few days.

Once you've been exposed to genital herpes your symptoms will probably appear within 2-20 days after infection. The first symptoms are itching, closely followed by sores, blisters and lesions.

Unfortunately even once the symptoms have disappeared, the virus is still lying dormant in your body and will do so for the rest of your life. (Much like you have to live with cold sores once infected). Luckily subsequent infections are rarely as painful as the first outbreak and with care can usually managed quite effectively.
