Life after Genital Herpes

After the first outbreak of genital herpes and once the infection has healed, many people make the mistake of assuming they are now free of the virus. Unfortunately this is not true. After the first outbreak, the virus lies dormant in the body just waiting for a trigger to reactivate it.

This trigger can be anything from stress to a low immune system which may result from other illness. Normally four to five outbreaks can be expected a year, however subsequent outbreaks are never as bad as the first.

For many people the amount of outbreaks over the years will decrease over time and eventually several years or more may elapse before other outbreaks occur. However it should be remembered that the virus is still "live" in the body, and there is the possibility of infecting other people if they have unprotected sex. The genital herpes virus can be passed from one person to another even if there are no blisters, sores or lesions present.

It should be remembered by everyone who has contracted the virus (or those who are at risk of contracting it) that there is no cure for genital herpes, it can only be managed, and when engaging in sex with another person, adequate protection should be used. He will need to keep a very close eye on you to ensure you don't suffer an outbreak when the birth is imminent. If you do feel you have an outbreak coming on just before you give birth, inform your delivery team immediately as they may decide to offer you a caesarian section. This is because if the virus is transmitted to your baby during a vaginal birth, it could cause problems such as meningitis.

Genital herpes can be managed, and managed successfully however it needs commitment to ensure it's kept under control.
