Warts Down There
Wart... what is it? It is an annoying blister-like infection that can appear all over the skin, inside the mouth cavity, genitals and rectum. This is triggered by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which has 60 subtypes. Some people are more prone to getting warts while others never have them at all.Remember that warts can be passed from skin to skin, and can be contracted through sexual intercourse. Some warts go away years after they come in while others seem to leech themselves on the skin permanently. Why this is the case, no one knows.
Warts must be treated, especially if they are the ones in genital areas. Genital or venereal warts are called condylomata acuminata. These warts signify a HPV or human papilloma infection. Women develop genital warts outside or inside the vagina, cervix, and womb or even somewhere in the anus. Men are less prone to contacting genital warts but if they do, the warts appear on the scrotum, anus, tip or shaft of the penis. Oral sex with an infected person can lead to genital warts in the mouth.
Genital wart treatment is different from the skin wart treatment. Here are some ways how to say goodbye to those pesky genital warts:
1. Liquid Nitrogen application.
Applying liquid nitrogen may just do wonders. Genital warts can undergo cryotherapy or the process of being frozen with liquid nitrogen. In this treatment, the doctor applies the liquid nitrogen religiously and systematically until they vanish away.
2. Podophyllin application.
Applying podophyllin to the genital warts on a weekly basis is proven helpful. Other than podophyllin, podofilox with the brand name Condylox may also be applied at home two times a day for 3 days with a corresponding three-day rest period after that.
3. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure or LEEP
This method removes warts as the doctor uses a loop-shaped sharp instrument to incise the wart from the skin.
4. Carbon Dioxide Laser Surgery
Large warts need large-scale procedures, hence the carbon dioxide laser surgery. This guarantees total genital wart removal.
5. Interferon Injections
Now if all efforts are futile, if LEEP, carbon dioxide laser surgery, podophyllin and liquid nitrogen do not all work, then this can be your last resort. Interferon, a chemical made by the body to fight infection, will be injected to the wart. This is to boost the body's immune system and battle out the virus responsible for the wart. Injections like this will be administered two times a week for a 8-week period until the warts have all gone.
There are other medications available for genital warts: trichloroacetic acid, 5-fluorouracil, and imiquimod. Trichloroacetic acid can be applied topically but the results aren't really that satisfactory and may cause buring and pain. The 5-Fluorouacil or Efudex as a cream can attribute to a long treatment period. It also has known side effects. Imiquimod (aldara) is one of the newer treatments in cream form.
If these genital warts are left untreated, they may grown into a cauliflower-like entity.
Remember that the genital warts are highly contagious and they can be easily spread through sexual intercourse with someone who have them. Warts are developed three months after the initial contact. Women must take Pap smear tests to locate any sign of human papilloma virus.
Don't freak out at the sight of genital warts. Remember with proper treatment, they will eventually die away.
