Chlamydia Explained
Chlamydia is becoming more common nowadays and is probably one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the western world. The organism Chlamydia trachmatis is responsible for at least half of all non specific vaginal and urethral infections reported. When first discovered Chlamydia was thought to be a virus, because it can only live inside another cell, but it has since been discovered to be a bacterium. It can be easily treated, especially in the first stages of the disease, but if not treated can cause severe damage to a woman's reproductive system.
Women's symptoms of Chlamydia can vary, but it often includes pain deep in the abdomen, frequent pain when urinating and also pain during sexual intercourse. However one of the major problems of Chlamydia in women is it can also often fail to show any symptoms at all.
Chlamydia should receive immediate attention as soon as it is diagnosed as it can block the fallopian tubes and make a woman sterile. If left untreated, Chlamydia can remain dormant for a time before spreading to the uterus and fallopian tubes. Chlamydia in women can also lead to PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease)
Also if a woman is pregnant, Chlamydia can be transmitted to an unborn child causing serious eye infections such as conjunctivitis and also in some cases blindness. Newborn babies who contract Chlamydia whilst being born through the vagina of an infected woman are also at risk of the Chlamydia bacteria spreading to their lungs which can cause pneumonia and prove ultimately fatal.
If men contract Chlamydia, they may have a slight discharge and mild inflammation of their penis. They may also complain of some discomfort when urinating also itching and burning. A huge problem with Chlamydia though (and why it is so prevalent), is often in both sexes there may be no symptoms at all. This can cause huge problems with the spread of the disease.
If recognised early enough Chlamydia can be cured very easily via antibiotics, so anyone who has practised unsafe sex by sleeping with different partners or who suspects their partner may have been sleeping around should be tested for Chlamydia to ensure they haven't become infected.
It's also a good idea if considering becoming pregnant to be tested for Chlamydia to rule out all possibilities of infection
