How common is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is the most frequently reported sexually transmitted disease (STD), especially among young adults and teenagers. However, most people who are infected do not know that they have chlamydia, because they may not have any symptoms.

Chlamydia is known as a "silent" disease because about three quarters of infected women and about half of infected men have no symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they usually appear within 1 to 3 weeks after exposure.

There have been more publicity campaigns advising the public about Chlamydia in recent years. However, studies carried out between 1996 and 2002 show that cases of Chlamydia infection which have been diagnosed, have more than doubled.

Chlamydia is believed to be responsible for 200,000 cases of infertility in women in the USA each year. In other parts of Europe, in countries such as Holland, Denmark and Scandinavia, Chlamydia infection has reduced over a 15 year time span.

Chlamydial infections are believed to be the most widespread of all notifiable sexually transmitted diseases. It is generally thought that in a population of 15 million, there are up to 300,000 cases of chlamydia each year. Thus there are many undiagnosed cases of chlamydia in the community which could be construed as a potential time bomb just waiting to go off.

It has been estimated that the true prevalence of chlamydia in the sexually active population within westernized countries is probably ranging between 5%-10%. These figures could be even higher.

There are many factors to take into consideration as to why rates of infection are soaring in these communities, and these can range from a prudish refusal to acknowledge there is a problem, to the usual problem of there not being enough money in the government pots to tackle the whole issue.

-- High profile public education campaigns have been introduced to inform people of the consequences of contracting Chlamydia.

In Sweden these initiatives were started more than 20 years ago. Now the most recent tests have been introduced into most of the Western European countries and the USA the issue of chlamydia may finally be addressed. Initiatives are also underway for professionals and public to become educationally aware of the latter through the 'sex lottery' which was recently launched by the Department of Health.
