Chlamydia - What Should I Know About It?
Chlamydia is the most frequently reported sexually transmitted disease (STD), especially among young adults and teenagers. However, most people who are infected do not know that they have chlamydia, because they may not have any symptoms.Chlamydia is known as a "silent" disease because about three quarters of infected women and about half of infected men have no symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they usually appear within 1 to 3 weeks after exposure.
It is one of the more common of the sexually transmitted diseases and is also the more easily treatable ones. Usually, due to there being no obvious symptoms to the disease, a man or woman may not know they have it. And sometimes, the only reason someone might find out they have the disease is because it has caused complications in some bodily function and if this stage is reached it might possibly be too late to administer effective treatment.
An example of where this could happen is that sometimes, in women, the Fallopian tubes can become damaged and when this happens the tubes can cease to work properly resulting in them becoming blocked.
Chlamydia is the most common preventable cause of infertility in women. When the fallopian tubes are blocked, no pregnancy is possible naturally. One option is IVF (in-vitro fertilization), but this only has marginal success rates: usually no more than 20 per cent of women end up with a baby.
Sometimes, women who have tubes that are damaged do fall pregnant but this means that the chances of having an ectopic pregnancy are greatly increased. (An ectopic pregnancy is one where the fetus develops in the tubes rather than the mother's womb). There are many risks associated with this - because the tube can rupture and cause profuse bleeding which can be fatal for both mother and baby.
The chlamydia infection can result in pain in the lower region of the abdomen and this can sometimes mistakenly be thought to be something other than a pelvic infection.
Chlamydia infection can also cause many problems for infected males. It is the most common cause of testicular inflammation (epididymo-orchitis) in men under 35. This can be a very painful condition and one in which there is a lot of severe pain, soreness and swelling in the scrotum. Further, Chlamydia has also been known to be the trigger for joint inflammation in some men.
Unfortunately, unless people in the medical profession are specially trained health experts in sexual matters, the vast majority of doctors do not possess enough knowledge to suspect chlamydia when trying to determine a person's symptoms, and therefore, as a result of this, they may not perform an appropriate test. Indeed, many of the healthcare professionals are usually not aware of how common and widespread Chlamydia is and that it can afflict a person without causing symptoms.
An urgent review into informative and educational campaigns for medical and health professionals is desperately needed. Some health experts find it hard to discuss sex and therefore are not able to even put their own patients at ease.
