Chlamydia Facts and Statistics

How much do you know about Chlamydia? Here are some facts and statistics from the U.S. government that you should know.

Chlamydia is the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease in the United States. It affects over 3 percent of the general population.

Nearly 5% of girls between the ages of 14 and 19 have Chlamydia.

Chlamydia is more common among poor and urban youth. The rate of Chlamydia infection among urban poor teens is nearly 11%.

13.3% of the 16 year old girls tested in one study were positive for Chlamydia.

Men get Chlamydia, too. In several surveys of young men in job training programs, 8.2% tested positive for Chlamydia. The rate was higher for young men between the ages of 20 and 24.

Only 2.4% of the young men who tested positive for Chlamydia had reported any symptoms. That means that 98% of them didn’t even know that they had an infection that they could pass on to others.

Chlamydia is one of the leading causes of infertility in both young men and young women.

Chlamydia is one of the leading causes of pelvic inflammatory diseases -- PID -- which can result in permanent scarring of the reproductive organs and chronic pelvic pain.

If a mother with Chlamydia delivers a baby vaginally, the baby has a 30% chance of contracting Chlamydia. It can cause pneumonia and conjunctivitis in newborns. Chlamydia is the leading cause of neonatal pneumonia in the country.

Chlamydia is the leading cause of testicular inflammation among young men under 30.

Chlamydia can be prevented by wearing a condom -- but it is not enough to wear a condom during penetration only. To be effective, the condom should be worn throughout any skin-to-skin contact.

You can get Chlamydia even if you only engage in oral sex. Chlamydia can grow in the mouth and throat, and be transmitted through oral sex.

Chlamydia has no symptoms in as many as 90% of all cases. That means that you can have Chlamydia and have no idea of it.

Chlamydia, if left untreated, can cause permanent damage to the reproductive organs of both women and men. While the infection itself is mild and often has no symptoms at all, the long-term results include PID, urethritis, scarred fallopian tubes, endodydimitis (inflammation and scarring of the tube that carries sperm from the testicles) and ectopic pregnancy.

Chlamydia is a leading cause of ectopic pregnancies -- pregnancies where the egg implants itself in the fallopian tube rather than the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies are potentially fatal for the mother.

Recent studies suggest that Chlamydia may directly affect sperm, though the mechanics aren’t quite certain yet. The sperm of men with Chlamydia seem less motile and viable than the sperm of men without Chlamydia.

You are most at risk of getting Chlamydia if you have more than two partners in a year. Your risk also increases if your partner has more partners, just as it does in any STD.

The Centers for Disease Control suggest that you be tested for Chlamydia once or twice a year if you are sexually active, especially if you have multiple partners.

Treatment for Chlamydia is easy. All it takes is a few days on antibiotics.

I hope this sexually transmitted diseases article was helpful to you, no matter how much... or how little it had to do with chlamydia cure test.
