Genital Herpes and You
If you have ever suffered from genital herpes, you'll know how painful it can be. However luckily it is usually only the first attack that is usually severe. Most subsequent attacks are usually much milder.Genital herpes is endemic in most westernised countries with the estimated number of sufferers in America reaching one in five people, and this figure has gradually increased by about 30% over the last thirty years with the biggest rise being in the number of young people who have contracted the virus.
Knowing you have contracted an "incurable disease" can be a mind numbing thought, you probably feel like a modern day leper and especially if this is your first attack you are going to feel quite ill.
So how do you cope with the knowledge that you have contracted genital herpes, and it's a disease that's going to stay with you for the rest of your life?
Well for a start you don't panic. Yes you will have to make some life changing decisions, and you will have to make adjustments to your sex life, (especially if you like lots of different sexual partners). But genital herpes is not quite the death sentence you may think it is.
As stated above, the first attack of genital herpes is always the most painful, and for the majority of sufferers any subsequent attacks are much milder and easier to bear. There is also very effective medication available which when used correctly can reduce the incidence of attacks by up to 90%. This medication is called Acyclovir and will be prescribed by your doctor to prevent and assist in reducing the severity of the attack. It also assists in speeding up the healing time of the blisters that form.
The herpes virus lies dormant in your body for the rest of your life once you have contracted it, and it flares up on occasion. The secret is to prevent those flare ups as much as possible, and there are several ways of doing this.
One of the best ways of preventing a flare up of genital herpes is to "beef up" your immune system. Herpes has the unpleasant habit of waiting until your immune system is less than it should be, and then jumps in to kick you whilst you're down.
Therefore if you know you have the herpes virus, it makes sense to keep your immune system in tip top condition. This includes keeping as stress free as possible, eating a sensible diet, getting an adequate amount of sleep and also plenty of exercise and fresh air.
Up until a few years ago many doctors suspected there was a link between genital herpes and cervical cancer, but this has now been disproved. However some doctors suggest that women should attend for vigorous smears every couple of tears to ensure they are cervical cancer free.
I hope this sexually transmitted diseases article was helpful to you, no matter how much... or how little it had to do with STD information.
