Relieving the pain of genital herpes

The first attack of genital herpes is always the worst, but that's no comfort when you are actually suffering from the pain and discomfort it is causing you. So have you tried actually warming the discomfort away?

During any attack of genital herpes, you are going to experience some discomfort whether it's your first attack or tenth! Having a bath or shower so your genital area is being bathed in warm soothing water can often be an effective pain reliever. You may have to do this several times a day to gain optimum relief.

Another method of relieving the pain is using a hair dryer set to the lowest setting to blow warm air onto the genital region. The air from the dryer will prove very soothing and will also possibly assist in the healing process of the blisters and sores dry up.

Soap and water is one of the best methods of keeping the genital area clean and safe from any secondary infection. Many people are tempted to raid their medicine cabinet for medications and ointments to soothe the pain and irritation caused by genital herpes. Unfortunately this is probably the worst thing to do as petroleum jelly and antibiotic cream can block the air that's needed to assist the sores and blisters to heal. Using a cortisone cream can even actively encourage the virus to multiply and become much more painful and widespread.

The most effective treatment for genital herpes is Acyclovir. This drug has been proved to be effective in the fight against Genital herpes and has proved robust in the fight against this disease. In fact it is so good; it's been proved to reduce the incidence of herpes attacks by up to 90%.

One of the best ways of ensuring discomfort is kept to a minimum when suffering from genital herpes is wearing loose fitting cotton underpants. If it's at all possible for a woman to wear a skirt or dress without pantyhose as well as cotton underwear, this will also be effective in allowing the skin around the genital area to breathe. Wearing synthetic underwear is possibly the worst thing you can do as it prevents air from getting to the infected area.

When suffering from the first attack, (which is always the worst one), passing urine can be extremely painful. This is because the acidic urine is passing over the open sores and painful blisters. For men this may not be such a problem, but women can find it a particularly painful experience. If possible it may be helpful to sit on the toilet and direct the urine stream away from the infected areas by using screwed up toilet tissue. Another option may be to urinate in the bath water after bathing and just before you get out. (The urine is then diluted and won't be as painful on the infected skin).
